Cobias are one of the world’s most prized (and fun) gamefish, so you know if a boat company is named after the species, it’s going to be a serious fishing package ready to take on all challenges.

Such is certainly the case with Cobia’s 280 Center Console.

The 280 is an improvement on the 277, one of Cobia’s most popular models. It’s notable for its features list, which is massive for a boat in this class. For one thing, it has a front-entry head, which is not something you see on center consoles in this size range. A stylish hardtop covers the amidships portion of the boat, including a three-sided windshield that features a vent and electric wipers for inclement weather and over-the-top chop. At the helm, the dashboard can be stuffed with state-of-the-art electronics.

Cobia Boats is part of Maverick Boat Group, along with Maverick, Hewes and Pathfinder brands, comprising one of the most respected names in the marine industry.

When Maverick bought the hallowed Cobia brand in 2005, it immediately began refining the brand’s quality, design, and performance to match its three other nameplates, all known as easy-to-fish, uncluttered, and fishing-focused. Like them, Cobias balance freeboard for safety and fishability, boast handholds that are out of the way and yet handy, and offer intuitive helms and easy-to-operate convertible parts.

Learn How Maverick Boat Group Builds Resin-Infused Boats

We visit the Maverick Boat Group factory to learn how the resin-infusion process benefits you.

When I first stepped into the Maverick Boat Group’s P2 factory in Fort Pierce, Florida, the first thing I noticed was what was missing. In most other boatbuilding facilities I have visited, I’ve been quickly overwhelmed by the smell of styrene. But here at the Maverick facility, I didn’t smell any of the noxious chemicals associated with building boats. The second thing I noticed as Charlie Johnson, the company’s director of marketing and promotions, walked me down the assembly line was what appeared to be a hull mold covered in long sheets of dry fiberglass. Then a group of workers began the process of encasing the entire mold in translucent, green-tinted plastic and affixing a crazy assemblage of plastic tubing. It looked like a scene out of Young Frankenstein meets Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. But as the team prepared to connect the tubing to a vacuum, followed by a pre-measured tub of resin, I knew I was getting a firsthand look at Maverick’s VARIS boatbuilding process. The acronym stands for vacuum-assisted resin-infusion system.

Search for the Holy Grail

The dual console layout is the next “ultimate do-it-all” sport utility concept for the boating industry. The mission objective is to find a layout that is equally adept at family watersports fun, fishing, beach taxi service, taking a crowd to a waterside eatery and hosting a cocktail party back at dockside. The challenge with all of those missions is that you need to have enough “transitional” space onboard to make it happen. Cobia may have just found the sweet spot with their new 330 DC.

New Boat Report

The builder’s flagship center console combines performance and fishing features in a handsome design Cobia might not have the cult-like following of Aquasport or Mako, but the builder has been producing boats for 60 years.

Cobias were originally built by Southern Fiber Glass Products of Orlando, Florida, in the late ’50s. In 1993, Yamaha Marine purchased the company and added new models to the lineup. In 2005, Maverick Boat Group — the Fort Pierce, Florida, builder of Maverick, Hewes and Pathfinder boats — bought Cobia, and the brand underwent a transformation with a new product lineup.

Boat Review

A day on the water with a boat full of kids and adults along with more toys and gear than one would think possible on board took me out of my comfort zone. Our mission in testing the Cobia 240 DC was to be packed with equal parts fishing, water activities such as swimming, snorkeling and tubing; along with a picnic lunch at the sand bar. Before we left the dock I was greeted by what looked like a yard sale alongside the Cobia we’d be testing. My initial reaction was trying to assess which of these items would be left behind due to a lack of storage space. Much to my surprise, between forward seating compartments, in-deck holds and a pair of roomy console interiors, we got it all loaded along with seven passengers with room to spare.

KING COBE

There’s a new queen of the Cobia Boats fleet, and she’s a serious fish-killing machine. The biggest eyebrow-raising feature of this biggest Cobia yet? Performance. With a pair of Yamaha F425 XTO outboards the boat cruises in the mid-40s and breaks 62 mph. Yowza. Credit goes to a twin-stepped hull design, which not only provides a speed and efficiency boost (at the 33-mph most efficient cruise the boat gets 1.5 mpg, which is significantly better than many competitors in this class), but also helps smooth out the bumps when hitting waves.

A noticeable trend in the boatbuilding future lately is trying to fit bigger features into smaller boats. The challenge builders are faced with is finding the right combination of options to combine while not overdoing it and more importantly, not closing in the usable space on board. Maverick Boat Group has found a winning combination in their new Cobia 240CC. Beginning with one of their most proven and popular hull designs, (the 237) Cobia completely retooled the topside forming a modern deck layout into a pleasant combination of part serious fishing, part family comfort, and topped it off with plenty of style.
